Sr. born circa 1807 in England. His son Joseph Newman Jr. was born December 07, 1827 in Kent, England. Joseph Jr. died December
01, 1910 at 13 Devonshire Place in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. He married Jane Elizabeth Poulter who was born in Crouchend
Hornsty, England. It is thought they were married September 24, 1848 in the Old
Church - St Pancras London, England.
The Newman family
history in Canada starts in the year 1870 when Joseph and Jane Newman emigrated
from England. They spent the first two years of their life in the new world in
Toronto before moving to Port Stanley in Elgin County, Ontario. Joseph was the
Sexton for many years at Christ Church Anglican in Port Stanley.

The
last I saw the patient alive was November 29, 1910. The death occurred on
December 1, 1910, at 8 PM. The cause of death - arterial sclerosis, duration -
several years. Immediate cause of death - hemorrhage of stomach. Duration a few
minutes. Physician name is F.O. Lawrence, St Thomas, Date December 3, 1910.

The Obituary for Joseph Newman
appears on page 1 of the December 2, 1910 St Thomas Daily Times, and reads “Lived Many Years at
Port Stanley”. Joseph Newman former Sexton of Christ Church there dies at the
house of his daughter in St Thomas. The death occurred in St Thomas on Thursday
evening of an old resident of Port Stanley in the person of Joseph Newman. Mr.
Newman had been living at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. John Clarke, # 13
Devonshire Place where his death occurred. Old age was the cause he being in
the 83rd year of his age. Mr. Newman was a native of England but he
had lived in Port Stanley for many years. He was for a long time the sexton of
Port Stanley. Deceased is survived by three daughters and three sons – Mrs.
John Clarke, city; Mrs. Henry Foster of Detroit; Mrs. Arthur Leighton of Port
Stanley; Joseph Newman city; James Newman of Collingwood Ohio; and John Newman
of Port Stanley.
Jane Elizabeth (Poulter)
Newman was
born in August of 1828 in Crouchend Hornsty England. She emigrated with her
husband and children in 1870 arriving first in Toronto before settling in Port
Stanley, Ontario. She was married approximately 1827 to Joseph in Deptford
England. While on a trip to Detroit Michigan to visit family Jane died on
February 4, 1907. She was returned to Port Stanley by train for burial.
The “Obituary for JANE NEWMAN appears in the St Thomas Daily Times” on
page 4 on February 4, 1907. Port Stanley, February 4th. The funeral
of the late Jane, wife of Joseph Newman, who died in Detroit on Friday, last,
took place today from the PERE Marquette railway station on the arrival of the
3:30 train to Christ Church cemetery. Services were conducted by Reverend Canon
Downie. The pallbearers were Erwin Livingston, Capt Joseph Hough, John
McDonald, John Price, James Gough. The deceased was married 60 years ago at
Ditford, (actually Deptford) 7 miles from Old London, and came to Canada with
her family 40 years ago. Two years were spent in Toronto, the balance here.
Immediate cause of death was congestion of the lungs. She leaves to mourn her
loss besides her husband, Jane of St Thomas, Joseph of London, England, Betsey
of Port Stanley, James of Cleveland, Emilia of Detroit, and John of Port
Stanley.

Does anyone know of an Alice Newman aka "Emma" born Black Creek (North of Toronto ON)in 1867 (now Toronto.) She married Duncan Michael McRae 1861-1939 in Uptergrove Ontario 11 Sep 1894. She died 5 Dec 1899 Orillia ON at age 32. Wondering if someone knows of an Alice Newman (aka Emma)who was christened in Black Creek ON in 1897. She married Duncan Michael McRae 1861-1939 on 11 Sept 1894 in Uptergrove ON. What a find! I am related to Joseph and Jane through my paternal grand-mother (Bets(e)y's daughter). Can anyone point me to a place that I can research her more?
