Susan Newman was a mid wife and quite often was called out in the night. Her payment on occasions was food in trade for service. Val Ross remembers being told that Susan was paid with eggs, chickens and potatoes. She cooked them all on return home and the family feasted at 3 in the morning. “When Grandpa John Newman died he still had his own teeth and a full head of curly white hair even into his nineties.” (Reference Val Ross – St Thomas, Ontario). John Newman is buried in the Union Cemetery, Elgin County.

In 1911 John and the family lived at 16 Colborne St in Port Stanley with the family as shown in the census. Val Ross remembers that the Newman family home slid into the river following flooding in Port Stanley.
