John Robert Newman, was born February 04, 1896, in Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada. John died the 30th of October 1967.

John Robert married Annie Belle Parker born August 28, 1895 on January 4, 1922. Annie died in the 9th of July 1934.

                   The children of John Robert and Annie Belle (Parker) Newman were -

·          William LeVerne Newman the son of John and Annie was born the 22nd of February 1923 and died the 10th of February 1962.

·          Annabelle Newman s born the 4th of February 1931, died at 32 on May 23, 1963.



The military museum in St Thomas has a Book of Remembrances that shows John Robert Newman - # 3138861 who was a Private, and the son of John and Susie Newman, enlisted June 1918. He served in the Canada Western Ontario Regiment, and was discharged February 1919. Book of Remembrances, Volume 2.



In the book called the Church in the Valley for the Anglican Church in Port Stanley, John Robert Lawrence Newman shows as being born February 4, 1896, and baptized March 1, 1896. The Witness’s were the mother, and grandparents.



John Robert (Bob) married his second wife Gladys Knight in 1943. Gladys (Knight) Newman’s Obituary on January 4, 1978 in the St Thomas Times Journal reads Mrs. Gladys (Knight) Newman, 89 Manitoba St., St Thomas, passed away at the St Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Tuesday, following a lengthy illness in her 61st year. Born in St Thomas on January 28th, 1917, daughter of the late Roy J Knight and Sarah (White) Knight, Mrs. Newman spent her life in the city. She was a member of Grace United Church and the Edna Rebekah Lodge. Her husband the late J. Robert Newman, passed away previously.

Surviving are two brothers, Reginald Knight of 318 Sunset Dr., and Leonard Knight of 3 Park Ave, both of St Thomas; and two step daughters Mrs. Arnold (Velma) Ross of 729 Elm St., and Mrs. Wilfred (Marion) Tribe of 18 Bell Ave., both of St Thomas. Several nieces and nephews also survive and Len Roberts of 89 Manitoba St., is a dear friend. A stepdaughter Miss Annabelle Newman and a stepson William L Newman passed away previously. Resting at L.B. Sifton, Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., where the funeral service will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 by Rev Chauncey MacKay of Grace United Church. Internment in the family plot of Elmdale Memorial Park.

A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home Wednesday at 7:30 pm, by officers and members of Edna Rebekah Lodge.

Vida Jane Ethel Newman was born February 12, 1892, in Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada. She died December 27, 1906, in Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada.

In the St Thomas Daily Times, page 1 the following appears - Daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Newman. Port Stanley. Died: December 27, 1906, age 15, from black diphtheria. Burial: December 1906, Union Cemetery.

The Newman family is buried in unmarked graves on the front left section as you face the cemetery, or in the section past the second driveway. Vida's father John told family losing Vida was the hardest thing he ever had to face.

John James Newman son of Joseph & Jane was born March 22, 1865 in England. He immigrated to Canada in 1870. John married Katherine “Susanna” Hannah Stephens January 01, 1889 in Port Stanley, Ontario, Canada, daughter of John Stephens and Jane Campbell. She was born May 28, 1870 in Ontario. Susan’s sister Sarah married John’s brother James.

John Newman, age 24 who was born in England, a gardener whose parents were Joseph and Jane Newman. Married Susan Stephens age 18, who lived in Port Stanley, born in the township of Southwold, Elgin County whose parents were John Stephens and Jane Stephens. The witnesses were Robert Payne Port Stanley and Lizzie Clark of the Township of Yarmouth. Marriage took place January 1, 1889 in Port Stanley. Religion Groom: Methodist, Religion Bride: Methodist. Parson is Robert C Parsons. Registration #: 002703.

Susan Newman was a mid wife and quite often was called out in the night. Her payment on occasions was food in trade for service. Val Ross remembers being told that Susan was paid with eggs, chickens and potatoes. She cooked them all on return home and the family feasted at 3 in the morning. “When Grandpa John Newman died he still had his own teeth and a full head of curly white hair even into his nineties.” (Reference Val Ross – St Thomas, Ontario). John Newman is buried in the Union Cemetery, Elgin County.

In 1911 John and the family lived at 16 Colborne St in Port Stanley with the family as shown in the census. Val Ross remembers that the Newman family home slid into the river following flooding in Port Stanley.
