Elgin Branch OGS 2018

Lynda and Jerry Wilson have assisted the Elgin OGS Branch over the last few years and enjoyed volunteering very much, but as of 2018 they will no longer be able to continue their volunteer efforts. It has been our privilege and an honor to assist the Elgin Branch 

The Elgin Branch is looking for volunteers to assist them on the Branch Executive for 2018. This can easily be done from a distance.

At our November meeting we are hoping to solicit volunteers for the positions which are about to become vacant. If you are interested in assisting the branch please email Bruce Johnson Jr. in advance of the November meeting at elginchair@ogs.on.ca

Upcoming September 25^th meeting for Elgin Branch OGS members

An appreciation meeting from Elgin County is set for 2 pm September 25^th at the Elgin County Archives. A presentation about the work on Talbot Maps by Tiffany Champagne is being given followed by a reception at the museum on the 4th floor afterwards.

The St Thomas Public Library has changed the direction of their focus on the local history room and therefore we are unable to house our collection there under the previous arrangement. Some of our microfilm is going to the Elgin County Archives. The collection will be downsized, and put in storage until a permanent home can be found.  That is about all we know at this point in time. We continue to look for material that can be added to our web site for the greatest access to all Elgin County Researchers. Any comments or concerns can be directed to elginresearch@ogs.on.ca

Elgin Branch OGS November 9 Meeting 2016

         Notice for the upcoming November meeting of the Elgin Branch. It will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016 at the St. Thomas Public Library. Jean Bircham, one of Elgin's MVPs and knowledgable volunteers, will be presenting a very useful topic on Newspapers - "What can I find in them". I am sure we have all read Newspapers before and think we know what's in it, but I think we will all find this presentation both enlightening and useful in assisting us in our ongoing genealogy researching.

           In addition, this meeting will allow members attending the meeting to elect the Branch's Executive Team for 2017. This an excellent opportunity to ensure that the direction of our Branch is in good hands.

Elgin Branch OGS - 100th Anniversary of the Elgin 91st Battalion leaving for France

June 24-26 is the 100th Anniversary of the 91st Battalion leaving for France. 

The Elgin Regiment is having an event to remember the men of the 91st and other men from Elgin who served in WW1. 

Part of the event is finding and contacting the descendants of the men and invite them to participate in the event. 

The nominal roll of these men will be posted on several of our Blog pages for individuals to check.
